Letter to the Editor:
Rush to judgment?
A recent caustic editorial titled BCS is not the business of Congress in your newspaper criticized three hardworking and fair-minded U.S. Congressman for requesting an investigation of the unfair trade policies and practices of the BCS.
The BCS has a stranglehold on the major college postseason football championship. Postseason championship play is a multi-million dollar business—over $136 million dollars in 2007 alone. By design, and by charter, this relatively small group of “big boys” chose to freeze out the competition. To say that possible antitrust and unfair trade activity is not important just because this time the issue is wrapped around college football is myopic at best.
So my question to the Editor of the Athens Banner Harold is—if the “big boys” who control the newsprint world decided to freeze you out of your business, would you be so quick to judge?
The hundreds of people I interact with on a regular basis believe the congressman’s actions are right on target, rational and honorable. A crackdown on the BCS is long overdue.
